Robert Mugabe: the missing diamond revenues and the elections

Robert MugabeIn our Top Stories / Must read post published last Sunday, we mentioned the fact that a Kimberley Process loophole was raising concern. And Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe may be pretty much concerned about it.

In an article published on NorthJersey.com, Zimbabwe Parliament committee says diamond revenue missing:

A Zimbabwean parliamentary committee said tens of millions of dollars of revenue that a diamond- mining company says its paid to the government never found its way to the Treasury.

Prince Mupazviriho, permanent secretary at Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Mines and Mining Development, said he hadn’t seen the report. “The diamond industry is operating without a clear legal framework and administration to provide assurance that the peoples’ resources are being protected,” the committee said. Non-profit groups including Partnership Africa Canada and Human Rights Watch have said in reports that diamonds from Marange are being smuggled across the border to Mozambique.

But diamonds are not the only concern for Mugabe, as we can read on The Independant: PM Morgan Tsvangirai accuses Robert Mugabe of frog marching Zimbabwe towards another ‘illegitimate and violent’ election:

President Robert Mugabe has been accused of “frog marching” Zimbabweans towards another “illegitimate and violent” election after unilaterally declaring 31 July as polling day. Morgan Tsvangirai, his political rival and prime minister in the power sharing government that followed the last election, has opposed snap elections saying they would violate the country’s new constitution.

An extraordinary summit of regional leaders has been called to discuss the forthcoming elections but has twice been delayed to accommodate Robert Mugabe…
