Featured Partnership: The Heart of Nuba
One example is our long-standing attention to Dr. Tom Catena's work in Sudan's Nuba Mountains.
Since 2003, when our founder Max Dana started a newsletter on the unfolding genocide in Darfur, Sudan has remained at the center of our work, with a particular focus on the Nuba Mountains.
The Nuba people have long endured aerial bombings, displacement and very limited access to medical care. Dr. Tom Catena is still the only permanently stationed doctor in the region: at Mother of Mercy Hospital, which now serves more than two million people, he works as surgeon, obstetrician and pediatrician, seven days a week.
In 2017, he received the Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity. To highlight his work and the crisis in the Nuba Mountains, we organized a screening of the documentary The Heart of Nuba at Paris City Hall, followed by a discussion with its director, Kenneth A. Carlson, human rights experts and representatives of NGOs, including Human Rights Watch.
