Kenya to audit mining licences

Africa is enormously bountiful and the commercial exploitation of its resources is more than 500 years old. Many countries of the African continent are now to taking control over their mining and logging industry to benefit, eventually, from their natural resources.

China’s gaining control over Africa’s mining industry may be a problem and we published an article in February: RDC: Concessions reinstated and awarded to Chinese-owned logging companies. Other countries like Kenya are also taking matters in their own hands.

Kenyan journalist Njiraini Muchira wrote about Kenya auditing mining licences:

Kenya has launched an audit of the licences of mining companies to establish how they were issued. The Ministry of Mining says the licensing regime will be streamlined to ensure the government gets value from its mineral resources […] By end of last year, a total of 129 companies had presented applications for exploration licence/permit to the Department of Mines while another 77 had applied for a dealers’ licence/permit […] Other reforms include formalising artisanal and small scale mining activities to save miners from exploitation by middlemen and ensure they are able to access support services like market linkages, technology and training on environmental and safety measures.
