As the country is still recovering from a devastating magnitude 7.0 earthquake in 2010 that killed more than 200,000 people and destroyed large parts of Port-au-Prince, another earthquake struck off the northern coast of Haiti last Saturday.

The magnitude-5.9 quake was centered about 12 miles west-northwest of the coastal town of Port-de-Paix and was followed by two aftershocks. At least 17 people died and almost 350 were injured when several buildings collapsed.

ReliefWeb reports the Haitian Civil Protection Agency (COUN) have reported 17 deaths, 333 injured and 7,783 families in need of humanitarian assistance. COUN reported 353 houses damaged and 7,430 houses destroyed in the Artibonite, Nord and Nord-Quest departments.

Haiti Libre published an article yesterday:

Following the earthquake of October 6, Food For the Poor Haiti (FFP) immediately mobilize its network. A few hours after the tragedy, its executives were already in contact with the community and religious leaders of the North West and Artibonite departments, the local elected officials and the Haitian government, to assess the extent of the damage and arrive at a coherent strategy to help the victims […] Food was deployed in the northern department to the parishes of Saint Michael and Tous les Anges and Saint Albert Le Grand de Pilate. Food is on its way to supply the Parishes of Saints Innocents of Port de Paix and Saint Aidant de l’Ile de La Tortue.

79 public and non-public schools were damaged in the earthquake that hit the northwest of the country on Saturday, 6 October. In June we wrote about a nonprofit helping Haiti’s literacy rate in the ‘forgotten villages’ of Masson and Sarazin; many organizations are working hard to help victims of the earthquake and to support young people across the country. Another ordeal Haitians have to overcome…
